The Whydah was a three-hundred ton galley, built as a merchant slaver to transport slaves to the New World. In 1717, Captain "Black Sam' Bellamy and his band of pirates captured the Whydah in the Caribbean and adopted the ship as their own, transferring treasure to her which they had plundered from other ships. After looting another 50 ships, Bellamy and his crew sailed north to Cape Cod where, according to local legend, Bellamy hoped to be reunited with his lover Maria Hallet. However, on April 26, 1717, a fierce northeastern wind caused the Whydah to run aground on the dangerous shoals and sink. Over 100 men drowned, including Captain Bellamy; only 8 survived. An attempt to salvage the Whydah failed and the surviving pirates were tried and all but two were hung.
Almost three centuries later, Cape Cod resident, Barry Clifford, discovered the Whydah's final resting place in 1982. Clifford's find was verified in 1985 with the recovery of the ship's bell inscribed, "The + Whydah + Gally + 1716".
