PLANTING:
Use some method to break up the soil (plow, disk, drag, etc.) to expose the dirt. If the grass/brush is tall or heavy, clear it away first. For best results, do a soil test for pH. Use a grain drill or no-till drill after preparing a good seed bed. A hand seeder works good for small plots. Drag, roll or culti-pack the seedbed and cover the seed with 1/4" of soil. Cut 2-3 times per year for optimal performance, weed control and nutritional value unless being kept under 10" by grazing.
RECOMMENDED DATES:
Plant April 15-June 1 or August 1-31 (upper midwest dates)
LOCATION:
Most food plots require at least 50% sunlight. Soil test for nutrient and pH needs. Requires adequate moisture, but no swampy areas.
FERTILIZER:
Fertilize in the spring and fall with 9-23-30 or 10-20-30 or similar, at 250 lbs per acre.
