These Eight Reales, also known as Portrait Dollars, were discovered in the remains of a Spanish brig of war off the coast of Louisiana.
Eight Reales were the preferred form of currency during the Revolutionary War era. Recognized as America's first Silver Dollar, it was accepted as legal tender up until 1857.
This Spanish colonial silver dollar became America's first monetary standard of value. Admired by America's Founding Fathers, it was recommended by Thomas Jefferson to be America's first silver dollar, and was adopted by the Continental Congress. Today, this coin is recognized as the Silver Dollar of the American Revolution.
Shops, markets, and taverns in colonial America gladly accepted these hefty silver dollars for goods and services. But perhaps their most important role was for the purchase of arms and supplies used by the fledgling American Army to help defeat the British.
After more than 200 years on the ocean floor, this hoard of Silver Dollars was recently recovered off the American coast. This rare discovery now gives you the opportunity to hold a genuine piece of Colonial-era history in your hand, and to imagine what important role these coins played in America's early years."
