Description
This 1666 8 Reales colonial Silver cob features the iconic Pillars & Waves design and is composed of 0.9310 fine silver. The design features the Pillars of Hercules, which represents the gateway to the Mediterranean Sea. The banners seen on both pillars say Plus & Ultra, Latin for More Beyond. Waves representing "the great Ocean Sea and the Spanish royal coat of arms. The coin also features the date '666' below the pillars, adding to its unique appeal. It is circulated with a VF grade and noted as aRare* issue in the Krause Manual and is described at page # 149, KM# 21.
The coin is perfect for collectors of colonial coins and those interested in the historical period of Potosi, Bolivia and the assayer in charge, whose tenure lasted through the rein of Philip IV and Carlos II. During this time the Assayer wrote a letter to the King requesting Negro slaves from Africa because they had depleted the indigenous or "available" populations from which the Spanish had relied on for slaves. An ominous reference to the harsh and evil environment forced on the enslaved workers in this year of 1666. A mark of El Diablo (the Devil)
recognized by the "Devout" Catholic Spanish whose lives objective was to "Convert" the heathens to Christianity.
And, (of course), fill the Kings need for Gold & Silver.
