DESPITE THE VALIANT ATTEMPTS TO SAVE HER, THE SHIP SOON BROKE UP ON THE CORAL AND SANK. RECORDS INDICATE THAT APPROXIMATELY 190 OF THE 500 PASSENGERS CARRIED BY THE ALMIRANTA (ADMIRAL'S FLAGSHIP) REACHED SHORE. RUMORS PERSISTED THAT LEAVING THE SHIP SURVIVORS PILED SUBSTANTIAL QUANTITIES OF THE SILVER TREASURE ATOP AND ADJACENT CORAL REEF HEAD WITH THE INTENTION OF RETURNING AND CLAIMING AT LEAST PART OF WHAT WAS REPUTED TO BE THE RICHEST TREASURE EVERT TO SAIL OUT THE NEW WORLD.
