    IN 1641, THE SPANISH GALLEON
NUESTRA SEÑORA de la PURA Y LIMPIA CONCEPCION
SET SAIL FROM VERA CRUZ, MEXICO IN A FLOTA OF 30 SHIPS. THE SPANISH CROWN ORGANIZED SUCH FLOTAS BETWEEN THE 16TH AND THE 18TH CENTURIES TO BRING TO SPAIN THE MINERAL RICHES, PRIMARILY SILVER AND GOLD, FROM NEW SPAIN TERRITORIES TO MAINTAIN ITS ECONOMIC AND MILITARY STRENGTH. SINCE THERE HAD BEEN NO SHIPMENT OF PRECIOUS METALS THE PREVIOUS YEAR, THE CONCEPCION CARRIED AN EXCEPTIONALLY LARGE TREASURE CARGO.
WHILE NEGOTIATING THE FLORIDA STRAITS, THE FLEET WAS CAUGHT IN A VIOLENT HURRICANE WHICH SCATTERED AND SANK MOST OF THE SHIPS. THE 600-TON, 135-FOOT CONCEPION SUFFERED SEVERE DAMAGE AND WAS ORDERED BY ADMIRAL JUAN DE VILLAVICENCIO TO HEAD FOR PUERTO RICO FOR REPAIRS. THE PILOTS ABOARD THE VESSEL MISCALCULATED THE COURSE AND RAMMED THE TREASURE-LADEN GALLEON ONTO THE TREACHEROUS ABROJOS REEF, SOME 80 MILES NORTHEAST OF HISPANIOLA, NOW THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. DESPITE THE VALIANT ATTEMPTS TO SAVE HER, THE SHIP SOON BROKE UP ON THE CORAL AND SANK. RECORDS INDICATE THAT APPROXIMATELY 190 OF THE 500 PASSENGERS CARRIED BY THE ALMIRANTA (ADMIRAL'S FLAGSHIP) REACHED SHORE. RUMORS PERSISTED THAT LEAVING THE SHIP SURVIVORS PILED SUBSTANTIAL QUANTITIES OF THE SILVER TREASURE ATOP AND ADJACENT CORAL REEF HEAD WITH THE INTENTION OF RETURNING AND CLAIMING AT LEAST PART OF WHAT WAS REPUTED TO BE THE RICHEST TREASURE EVERT TO SAIL OUT THE NEW WORLD.
